A year ago, about this time, we happened across our very first ever HORNY TOAD!
We had immediate affection for the spikey fellow from our long association with little Arliss from Fred Gipson's "Old Yeller". We were thrilled to actually handle one! We researched them online to find they don't do well in captivity. So we kept it around for a day or two, then turned him loose in the rocky hills. Nashua named him "Spike".
Imagine our delight, when Ben came across this wee fellow a week or so ago!
OMG!!!! I love horny toads!! When I lived in Texas my dad would go golfing and I would just jump out of the cart and search for them. One time I kept one for the whole 18 holes and just pet it in my hand, it was so precious. It almost looked like it was falling asleep, but now that I look back it could have just been stressed. I let it go at the end of the round--but yeah they are so adorable and pretty soft!
ReplyDeleteDid you ever watch "Old Yeller"? Where Arliss trades a horny toad and a "woman-cooked meal" to Bern Sanderson in exchange for Old Yeller, the dog? The scene is a true classic around our house :)
ReplyDelete"Well, that's a mighty fine lookin toad, an I want him bad. But he ain't nearly as big as a dog. Seems like I oughta get a little to boot."
We have a picture of you with a regular toad at our cabin with Ben! You were a cutie pie, for sure! I can just picture you lovin on a horny toad!! :)
Oh i remember that day!! You should post it for memories sake hahaha but yes I love frogs---Josh broke my heart when he said he used to go "frog-stickin" as a little kid hahaha boys will be boys I guess.
ReplyDeleteIf I can find, I will, for sure! But it was before we went "digital"...it is in a photo album somewhere! We called the retaining wall by the shop "Toad Wall" after "toad hall" from "Wind In The Willows", still one of our favorite read-alouds!
